As the countdown gets to "1" just before the race begins, tap R2 + X to get a power boost.

Press Triangle + Square + X + Circle and the camera will look behind you.
# Avoiding a Peace Maker

When an opponent fires a Peace Maker, it automatically destroys the car in first place, even if you use a Red Eco weapon. To avoid getting destroyed by it, when you see that a Peace Maker is closing in on you (four white lines surround you making a diamond), hold Square to stop and begin driving in reverse. Then when whoever is in second place passes you, they will get destroyed instead of you. Alternately, if you have a shield as a red weapon it will protect you from a Peace Maker.
